Club History

The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham sponsored a new “Over The Mountain” Club known as The Kiwanis Club of Shades Valley at its Charter Night ceremony December 28, 1955. Begun with 32 Charter Members, the new Club initiated its robust mission of Community and Youth Service in the rapidly growing area now encompassing Homewood, Mountain Brook, Cahaba Heights, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, parts of Birmingham and unincorporated Jefferson County.

Through the years our Club has conducted annual and continuing fund-raising events including horse shows, a Travel and Adventure Film Series, and since the mid-1980′s, the Annual Pancake Day and Silent Auction now held at Homewood High School. In 1986 leadership of the Kiwanis Club of Shades Valley encouraged the establishment of a charitable Foundation for the purpose of engaging in and promoting designated activities, and administering funds and income related to these activities. Today, income from over $60,000 in the Foundation enhances funds raised at the Pancake day and Silent Auction.

With the continued business and population growth “over the mountain”, new Kiwanis Clubs, sponsored in part by our Club, was chartered. As the size of our Club increased above sixty members, the membership changed our designated meeting space to The Club atop Red Mountain. In 1996 after considerable discussion and debate, the membership voted to change the organization’s official name to The Kiwanis Club of Homewood – Mountain Brook to reflect the primary service area currently and for the foreseeable future.

Through the years, The Kiwanis Club of Homewood – Mountain Brook and its predecessor organization has produced two Kiwanis Alabama District Governor and ten Division Lieutenant Governors.

The Kiwanis Club of Homewood – Mountain Brook proudly sponsors Key Clubs at Homewood, Clay-Chalkville and Hewitt-Trussville High Schools, as well as the Builder’s Club at Homewood Middle School. Academic scholarships are awarded annually to graduating students at the High Schools. The Kiwanis Club also supports athletic and music programs in the school systems and volunteers time for school projects.

Kiwanis Club of Homewood – Mountain Brook members give funds and share service hours at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama, YMCA programs, Salvation Army Holiday Bell Ringing, The Sunday Club, Reading Program at local Head Start centers, outdoor learning center at Barrett Elementary and many other causes.
